Last time I was in Manchester we visited the wonderful North West Film Archive, to have a look at any dance related material they may have. We found two great bits of film which will be shown at The Whitworth Social event. The first is from 1924, shot at The Piccadilly Restaurant and Dance Salon. The film shows shots of the crowded dancefloor, the Piccadilly Dance orchestra, waitresses serving tables, and a demonstration of The Flirtation Waltz, performed by Walter and Bobby Browning.
The second piece of film is from ‘A City Speaks’, produced for the Manchester City Council in 1946. The sequence we will be screening shows local lesiure activities, including a dance to the accompaniement of The Halle Orchestra, with a dramatic crescendo.
